How Your Period Can Affect Your PCOS
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects many women worldwide. It is characterized by an imbalance of reproductive hormones, leading to various symptoms such as irregular periods, infertility, weight gain, and excessive hair growth. One aspect of PCOS that often goes unnoticed is how your period can be affected by this condition.
Irregular Menstrual Cycles
One of the hallmark symptoms of PCOS is irregular menstrual cycles. Women with PCOS may experience infrequent periods or even skip them altogether. This occurs due to the hormonal imbalances that disrupt the normal ovulation process. Without regular ovulation, the uterine lining does not shed regularly, resulting in irregular or absent periods.
Heavy or Prolonged Bleeding
While some women with PCOS may have infrequent periods, others may experience heavy or prolonged bleeding when they do menstruate. This can be attributed to the thickened uterine lining that builds up over time due to irregular shedding. The longer the lining has been accumulating, the heavier the bleeding can be when it finally sheds.
Hormonal Fluctuations
PCOS is primarily caused by an excess production of androgens, which are male hormones. These hormonal imbalances can affect the regularity and intensity of your menstrual cycle. Fluctuating hormone levels can lead to mood swings, irritability, and other emotional changes during your period. Additionally, the hormonal imbalances can exacerbate premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms, making them more severe for women with PCOS.
Increased Pain and Discomfort
Women with PCOS may also experience increased pain and discomfort during their periods. This can include abdominal cramps, lower back pain, and breast tenderness. The severity of these symptoms can vary from person to person, but the hormonal imbalances associated with PCOS can contribute to heightened pain sensitivity during menstruation.
I hope that you are not struggling with painful periods or just horrendous periods. If you are, let me know! I would love to help you.
